The South Coast Board Riders held the last round of the 2011 championship in fun 2 to 3 foot waves at Day Street on Saturday 17^th. Mens winner Alex Rix, 2^nd Steve Manners, 3^rd Grant Stocker and 4^th Andy Manners. Girls winner Ellie Francis, 2^nd Tayla Hanak, 3^rd Jamie Buchanan and 4^th Georgina Thomas.

The SCBR 2011 Club presentations was then held  at the Middleton Tavern after the event with the attendance of club members and sponsors. Alex Rix was crowned 2011 SCBR Mens Club Champion. Jamie Buchanan was crowned 2011 SCBR Girls Club Champion.Brae Adams Junior SCBR 2011 Club Champ.Vance Gordon Senior SCBR 2011 Club Champ. Special mention of the hard work and generous support provided by the SCBR Club President  Aaron Woods. Also the club has a growing member base with 50+ members form our youngest surfer 8yr old Aston Woods (who won the Grom Award 2011) to the oldest surfer Craig Adams at 50. All local surfers are encouraged to join for the 2012 season, with the first contest scheduled for Saturday February 4^th.

SCBR Contest Director Luke Horlin-Smith said “the club had a great year and we are thankful to those who have supported the board riders, mainly club sponsors Michael Woods, Big Surf Australia and Adams Plumbing. We are looking forward to competing in the Kirra Teams Challenge on the Gold Coast and the Jim Beam Global Tag Team event in late Feb at Byron Bay.”

In blustery conditions at Gunnamatta Beach Phillip Island Boardriders (92.53) have recaptured the Victoria Jim Beam Surftag Title with Carl Wright posting the highest score of the event during the one-hour final. Local club Peninsula Surfriders (75.8) finished second with South Australia’s South Coast Boardriders (74.49) third and Torquay (53.47) fourth.

With the top three teams qualifying to the Jim Beam Surftag Australian Championships last years Victoria JBS Champions Torquay Boardriders have missed out on qualifying with surprise packet South Coast Boardriders (SA) qualifying in their first year of the series.

Competing for the first time in the series the South Coast Boardriders surprised everyone after narrowly advancing thru their opening heat finishing 1.83 ahead of Torquay’s B team and then comfortably finishing in second position in their semi final. The inexperienced team of Max Longhurst (20.0), Khai Adams (18.53), Phillipe Didelot (17.23), Alex Rix (12.1) and Grant Stocker (4.63) improved with each round after struggling early with their time management. First surfer Max Longhurst was the standout for South Coast scoring 15.87 and 18.6 in the earlier rounds.

South Coast President Aaron Woods said, “It was so worth the drive over, the boys surfed really well in rather difficult conditions. I think a few of the boys had to pinch themselves this morning to think we are going to the Nationals in February where the level of surfing is at it’s highest.”

Round two of the Toyota State Shortboard Titles were held over the weekend in wet and wild conditions on the states south coast near Victor Harbor.

Over ninety of the states best surfers braved the testing conditions, all vying for crucial ratings points to qualify for the 2011 South Australian state team to compete in the Australian National Titles.

Day one was a true case of ‘the calm before the storm,’ with competition getting under way at the beautiful Waitpinga Beach in near perfect conditions.

The weather held out for five hours before howling onshore winds and rain squalls completely hampered conditions, forcing event organisers to postpone the remainder of the event until the Sunday.

Though before the day had been called to a halt, spectators and families were lucky to witness an explosive combination of talents bringing progressive surfing and commitment to the line-up, usual suspects throwing fins-out turns and vertical re-entries to stamp their authority and advance through to the semi finals.

Day two saw the competition move to Middleton Bay, which was the only option given the blustery south westerly winds.

The crew bunkered down in the Middleton hut and whilst conditions were wild the surf standard of South Australia’s best spoke for itself.

Khai Adams, 18 years of age took down a star studded line up to claim the top honors in the open men’s division, taking out Max Longhurst (Middleton) in second place, Teale Vanner (Kangaroo Island) in third and Mack Baddack (Port Willunga) in forth place.

Khai remained in third place for the majority of the final, however in the final few minutes of the heat found a nice inside wave and busted a beautiful air reverse, claiming near perfect scores from the judges pushing him to the top of the podium.

“The conditions were really hard, however I managed to find a couple of good ones that enabled me to do a few turns, I was lucky to get that nice inside wave at the end” Said Khai.

Alice Gilbert managed to snag first place over perennial performer Brinkley Davies (Hope Forrest) in second, Toyota round one winner Georgie Thomas in third (Middleton) and Cheryl Peat (Seaford) in forth position.

“I am feeling good, the conditions were pretty challenging out there today but it was good to have all of the girls really pushing me”. said Alice.
